Hoarding vs. Collecting

hoarder(n.): a person who accumulates things and hides them away for future use.

collector(n.): a person who collects things of a specified type, professionally or as a hobby.

The difference between hoarding and collecting is the main idea. Hoarding is an unintentional, personal and emotional attachment to certain items that are left as clutter and can effect and change somebody's whole life. Hoarders are people who never want to throw their items out, and it can get to the point where they're living in an unhealthy environment, like the top picture to the left. Not only does hoarding effect the person who is doing it, it effects their whole family as well. Collecting is a type of hobby that you enjoy doing and cannot harm anybody in the making. Having a collection of something always has a theme and it is based upon the things you are interested in. For example, we are learning about Portia Munson who is famous for her collections. The theme to her collection in the picture on the bottom left is the color pink. Some people see both hoarding and collecting as clutter, but in fact they are more different than you think.
